Submissions and other work
Over the past year, as part of our ongoing commitment to reducing the inequalities gap, we have had a particular policy and advocacy focus on housing and homelessness. This is consistent with our understanding of housing as a social determinant of health.
Specific pieces of work have included:
A submission to a Parliamentary inquiry into the adequacy and future directions of public housing response (in our Client Survey, more than 40% of respondents were in government-supplied housing).
A response to the State Government’s discussion paper on the ‘Homelessness 2020 Strategy’. A key outcome from this work was ISCHS achieving representation on a high-level stakeholder group to advise the State Government on the development and rollout of the Homelessness 2020 Strategy. In the new homelessness landscape, the community health sector is expected to play a more significant role in the homelessness response. ISCHS is proud of the work it has done to influence this agenda.
Showcased in the DVD, Minimising Health Inequalities - Innovative Australian Case Studies. This educational video produced by VEA, who provide education and training videos for schools and universities, featured ISCHS as 1 of 3 organisations that have developed innovative programs to help minimise the impacts of health inequalities.
Beyond housing and homelessness, ISCHS also represented the community health sector on the Ministerial Advisory Group charged with developing the 2011/14 Victorian Women’s Health Strategy, which is nearing completion, and maintained ongoing representation on the Ministerial Advisory Group on Prostitution.
Our work has been recognised through numerous awards, including Primary Health Service of the Year in 2010.
